The Book of Daniel
I tuned in to NBC’s new television series, “The Book of Daniel” last night. This is the one where Jesus pops up periodically in the life of Reverend Daniel Webster that has generated such controversy.
According to NBC, Jesus is Daniel’s “best friend and confidante” and “serves as a sounding board and encourages Webster to find the answers to his questions within himself . . .” Right. Where else might the answers be?
Here’s the good news: The show is really tedious.
The female bishop. The gay son. The angst-ridden, drug-dealing teen daughter. There isn’t a liberal canard or stereotype that the producers didn’t include.
My favorite moment of silliness was when Jesus and Daniel are sitting around chatting and exchanging jokes and Jesus says: “You need to laugh more.”
Such profundity. Now where was that clicker?

Charmaine, didn’t realize that watching would involve masochism. I was safely away, via the remote, on the Sci-Fi Channel. I recorded TBOD and watched briefly this morning. I can’t add anything as I only watched for 5 minutes.
Forgot to mention that the actor Garret Dillahunt(Jesus) was seen swinging from a noose in the last episode of the season of Deadwood. But I won’t make any kind of resurrection jokes. Honest.
As an Episcopal priest, I found the show a great disappointment.
I think the medium of television is simply incapable of presenting the complexity and simplicity of Scripture.
Television is truly all about “sound bites.” The ancient Scripture is the very antithesis of “sound bites.”
Television will never be able to present “the good news” that is true to Scripture.

I AM A DEVOUT EPISCOPALIAN AND FOUND THE SHOW PRETTY CLOSE TO WHAT GOES ON IN OUR DIOCESE. THE FACT THAT A PRIEST ACTUALLY SEES JESUS MAY BE WHAT THE COUNTRY NEEDS. WHY CAN SHOWS PORTRAY PRIESTS AS PEDIFILES, ADULTERERS, AND WORSE – BUT – OH HEAVEN FORBID WE SHOW ONE ACTUALLY RELYING ON JESUS FOR GUIDANCE. NBC SHOULD NEVER HAVE BUCKLED UNDER PRESSURE. THE CAST WAS/IS AN EXCELENT GROUP OF CHARACTERS AND SHOULD REALLY HAVE BEEN GIVEN A CHANCE.
