Howard Dean is one of the best things that ever happened to Republicans. Seriously.
Dear Dr. Dean gave a speech this past weekend to the College Democrats and here’s what he had to say:
The president and his right-wing Supreme Court think it is ‘okay’ to have the government take your house if they feel like putting a hotel where your house is. . .
He’s referring to the Kelo v. New London decision, so let’s do take a look at how that decision came down.
JUSTICES IN THE MAJORITY:
John Paul Stevens — liberal; David Souter — no comment; Ruth Bader Ginsburg — liberal; Stephen Breyer — liberal; and Anthony Kennedy — not liberal, though who knows these days. . .
JUSTICES WHO OPPOSED THE DECISION:
Chief Justice William Rehnquist — conservative; Antonin Scalia — conservative; Clarence Thomas — conservative; Sandra Day O’Connor — depends on the day. . .
Right. I see how one might characterize a decision by the liberal block of the Court as. . right-wing. And of course, none of these Justices were appointed by this President Bush.
Oh, and wait. Here is Dean’s boffo conclusion:
I am sick of being divided!

Charmaine, I agree that in some ways Howard Dean is the greatest thing to happen to the GOP since Reagan decided to run for president.
On the other hand, Dean isn’t a complete imbecile. And when he’s not screaming incoherent blather, he’s very likely calculating what he says.
I think that unfortunately most Americans respond only to sound bites. And Dean knows that many people will 1) have heard *something* about the Supreme Court confiscating somebody’s private property to build a hotel, 2) have heard *something* in the mainstream media about the Supreme Court being conservative, and 3) will do ZERO due diligence to discover the truth behind any of it, and will therefore just accept what Dean says as true.
And then, due to Dean’s statement, they’ll link Bush to it and Republicans as a whole look a little worse. Democrats, in comparison, become the saviors who will protect their private property from Republicans in general, and specifically from over-zealous conservative judges in the pocket of “evil big business.”
Maybe I’m just pessimistic, but this is how the underlying leftist bias in the media plays itself out, more often than not.

And, if you’ll permit me, your analysis also underscores the reality of the hardball politics I’ve been talking about lately regarding Roberts. . .
