Pick a Publicity Shot

A picture is worth a thousand words.

We are updating Charmaine’s pub shots. Following are two. We need to pick one.

Please send me an email or comment and let us know which one you’d pick and why.

leaning forward, or

sitting straight up.

The is the raw work of branding and image. You will notice that most portraits will have the subject facing toward his or her right — showing the left side of the face.

Unseen would be the subject’s feet. They will both be flat on the ground — but not together, not parallel. But one foot would be slightly ahead of the other. If standing, this would be an Hellenic pose as Alert Reader Pat Patterson comments about the Rocky statue.

A picture is worth a thousand words is so Chinese, so exotic — so like Confucius. And so wrong.

The thousand words is actually an American marketing campaign from the 1920’s.

i like the sitting strait one, you look happier and more responsive, in the first one you look hunched over.

    top is intense.

    this is good for girls.

    and has my vote.

  4. I would go for the lower. The top one does look hunched, and confrontational – as though glareing at the viewer.

Don’t bring my name up when either discussing hair styles, formal portraits or new-born babies. I have an unerring instinct for saying exactly the wrong thing.

Both look fine, honest! Can I go now?

When I first looked at these, I did lean (no pun intended) towards the top picture. Leaning forward makes me think of two friends talking — they tend to lean towards each other as they share thoughts and concerns with each other. However, the facial expressions have changed my opinion. Originally I thought the leaning forward picture had a smile that seemed a little more relaxed where the other picture seemed more polished, more “I am getting a publicity shot made.” Looking at them today, something about the eyes in the leaning forward picture looks more like a puppy about to be whipped. That is an image someone as intelligent and well spoken as Charmaine doesn’t need to project.

Dare I say it? The lean forward pose has the tendency to insinuate an osteoporosis look. Sorry. No. 2 wins.

    Former C-cubed,

I thought the “lean forward” made Charmaine look more mature and ready for a fight.

    Or.

Or, made her merely look older in need of calcium…?

    Branding/image is hard work.

    Thanks for your comment,

Pat P, and thank you for not guessing age and weight…

I’d use the top one (leaning forward). The other one makes her look too much like a purchasing agent…

    Regards,

Otto, Materiels Management never looked so good…

And yes, I think she is leaning toward the leaning forward.

Hi. I am a big fan your blog and I enjoy the work you do for families. I would pick picture number 2 because it is a more inviting picture. I would be comfortable, if I saw that picture, approaching you and feeling like you would be willing to talk. It also shows a very classy lady who is pretty and smart. Thanks for allowing us to help. Please keep up the good work.
