John Stuart Mill on War

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse.

This quote brings back memories! We had to memorize it at Officer Training School (Air Force). It struck me hard then and has stayed with me ever since. If more people understood this concept, the reasons why we are still at war–why it does matter that we have not “found” WMDs–would not be so hard for some to comprehend (and then there are those who don’t really care; they are against the war for idealogical reasons, for greed or for power and aren’t interested in real life. Those folks wouldn’t be convinced otherwise by anything.)

I can only hope people wake up soon before we do something stupid, like pull out early (read: before the job is done) and shame yet another generation of Americans.
