Charmaine Getting Ready for Sotomayor Hearings Testimony on Thursday & Townhall Article
Charmaine is reviewing her briefing books prepping for her testimony to the Judiciary Committee on Thursday. She has provided Congressional testimony on two other occasions as an expert witness.
Dunno her hit time yet. Some Senators have said that any witness who says ‘Sotomayor is an activist’ will be challenged.
So I turned to Charmaine and ask, “Is Sotomayor an activist judge?”
She replies, “Yes.”
Expect fireworks on Thursday.
From TownHall.com, Grist for the Grill: To Question Sotomayor,
When the Senate Judiciary Committee begins grilling Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor this week, one question will almost certainly not be on the agenda. Ironically, it is the question that is most important to President Obama, if his statement about the main quality he seeks in a high-court appointee is anything to go by.
Obama told Planned Parenthood’s national conference in July 2007 that, if elected President, the criteria he would use to select Supreme Court judges would be their personal feelings – specifically, their ability to feel “empathy.” In fact, the least appropriate question for Judge Sotomayor would be about her personal feelings on Planned Parenthood’s core issue – abortion – or on any other politically charged issue that may come before the Supreme Court.
From The Washington Post, Anti-Abortion Leader to Testify at Sotomayor Hearing, By Jacqueline L. Salmon
Yoest is a calm, articulate, smart abortion opponent — the kind who gives abortion-rights supporters nightmares.
Since virtually the moment Sotomayor’s name surfaced as a possible Supreme Court candidate, AUL has been conducting vigorous opposition research.
It has set up two Web sites, including Sotomayor411.com that compares Souter to Sotomayor on a variety of issues, including abortion, end-of-life issues and the rights of abortion demonstrators.
Suffice to say that Sotomayor doesn’t fare too well. And it has also has AskSotomayor.com, which lays out 10 questions that it says senators need to ask her.
Yoest is the only representative of any pro-life groups to be invited to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee, which started its hearings on Sotomayor’s nomination today. She will present her comments to lawmakers on Thursday.
No representatives of any major pro-abortion groups, including NARAL, Planned Parenthood and others appear to be on the list of representatives invited by Democrats on the panel.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to testify before the Judiciary Committee about the nomination of Judge Sotomayor to the highest court in the land,” Yoest told LifeNews.com about her invitation.
“I am looking forward to sharing AUL’s extensive legal research about Judge Sotomayor’s record. In particular, her radical associations and judicial philosophy raises serious concerns in the pro-life community,” she said.
Senate Republicans Ask Pro-Life Group’s President to Testify on Sonia Sotomayor, by Steven Ertelt, LifeNews.com,
Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — When leaders of various advocacy groups get a chance to testify on the nomination of Supreme Court pick Sonia Sotomayor, a leading pro-life advocate will get a chance to represent the pro-life community. Senate Republicans have asked Americans United for Life president Charmaine Yoest to testify.
Yoest is scheduled to testify on Thursday, primarily to highlight Sotomayor’s involvement with LatinoJustice PRLDEF and make the argument that, as she put it, “a vote for Sotomayor is a vote for unrestricted abortion on demand.” PRLDEF has taken positions in opposition to parental notification and bans on partial birth abortion, Yoest said.
Yoest also said she has heard rumors that Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Al Franken, D-Minn., will be “pretty aggressive in their questions” when she takes the stand Thursday, but “we’re welcoming the opportunity to get out her record.”
“If people are surprised about how much abortion is coming into play, maybe that’s because they haven’t been paying attention to her record,” Yoest said.

Anti-Abortion Activists: Hearing Outbursts Show That “The Grassroots Are Energized”, By David Weigel
Amy Harder spoke to Charmaine Yoest, the president of Americans United for Life, before and after four anti-abortion protesters interrupted the Sotomayor hearings and were ejected from the room for misbehavior. Yoest — who’s the lone anti-abortion expert on the GOP’s witness list — didn’t sound too bothered.
