Christopher Hitchens on Thomas Jefferson

Met Christopher Hitchens today. . . very interesting. More later. Here’s a quick hit: my favorite quote of the day. Talking about Jefferson and the Declaration, Hitchens said “life” and “liberty” were obvious, but that “the pursuit of happiness” was an interesting addition and no one knows quite where it came from.

He said it was like adding gin to campari. In his typically laconic way.

As a UVA grad you should know Jefferson ended up with the happiness platitude because he was only looking to complete the sentencse with anything but what John Locke used: property.
