|Building Understanding With A Picture of Lincoln|
He was an unusual football leader with the rarest of qualities: a quarterback with compassion.
“People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care,” Jack Kemp often said.
Kemp took his skills on how teams work with the Buffalo Bills to president George H.W. Bush’s cabinet where he served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The QB/Compassionate-Politico was a ‘bleeding-heart conservative’ who was the picture of influence when he first came to his office building.
Secretary Kemp started with, well, pictures. The old dull gray HUD walls and halls were hung with old dull gray photos of housing developments — government run tenement slums. The only thing worse than living in of those soul-killing blocked monstrosities was having to look at a picture of one.
They were not inspiring.
The first thing Kemp did was to take down the pictures of those eyesores and replace them with pictures of hope. He said that he spent some $60,000 re-decoration dollars on photographs and framing for the HUD building. A tremendous (government) sum even back in the early 1990’s.
Instead of apartment buildings, visitors now saw majestic pictures of Lincoln. Jack Kemp, in spite of his accomplishments, understood what people wanted at a basic level.
He said, “I wanted to give people a vision of the future, of home ownership…”
Kemp practiced the Proverb, 4:7, The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
